#20 - Andrew Gordon - August 27, 2017 - Ocean View, Delaware

I've known Andy Gordon since 1989 when we were both students at RIT studying photography. Andy later went on after RIT to get a master degree in printing technology and worked for many years consulting and advising in the printing industry. He knows a great deal about the graphic communications industry.  As Andy says once he got out of school "I became a trend watcher and consultant focused on emerging digital printing technologies for use by the commercial printing and photography industries."  He seems to have done quite well in that profession.

In the past few years Andy has had to step back from a regular working schedule to deal with some back pain issues, but when I met him after not seeing each other in 24 years he was happily on the mend and doing the hard work of physical therapy.

Andy found his way back to photography over four years ago as a form of therapy. He started shooting abstract images with an iPhone. Over time, his work became increasingly more complex as he body began to heal. He has invested in state of the art photo and lighting equipment with the goal of producing high depth of field macro still life images. He uses tools and techniques used by scientific photographers but applies them to create fine art images. The images have an unparalleled sharpness and quality because they are compromised of dozens of images that are stacked together and combined digitally where only the sharpest parts of the image are used.  He uses a complex process called focus stacking.  While he’s only been shooting for a short period of time, he is starting to get some recognition for his images. A beautiful minimalist image of a maple leaf won the top award at the Ward Museum of Wildfowl Art’s 2017 Art in Nature Photography competition. Take a look at some of his images here and here.

Andy lives in a wonderful beach house a few miles from Bethany Beach, Delaware with his wife and two dogs.  He grew up spending summers surfing in the nearby ocean and gladly settled down near the beach a few years ago.
