# 7 - Jeromie Stephens - April 8, 2017 - Fredericksburg, Virginia

I met Jeromie Stephens a few years ago when I sold him bulk matte board on eBay. We chatted and discovered we had a lot of similar interests, photography being one of the central ones along with similar interests in music - Frank Zappa and the Grateful Dead. Jeromie mentioned that he did large format film photography including 8"x10" work. He also mentioned that he had an impressive darkroom in his house and invited me for a tour.  A few years later, I finally made my way to his home near Fredericksburg, Virginia to see his place and to hang out. He indeed has an impressive darkroom - a world class darkroom.

Jeromie has an interesting career background - he never has worked as a photographer to earn a living, although his father and grandfather did.  His career has been in the U.S. Army and Army Reserves.  He was active duty for 10 years working for The White House Communications Agency (WHCA) for six of those years under Bill Clinton. The job took him all over the world and United States. The organization was created to provide normal and emergency communications requirements in support of the President. It is a job for some of the most stringently vetted members of the US military.

After his stint at the White House, he became a US Army drill sergeant (Fort Knox, KY) for two years. After he retired from the military he recently began a job working in telecommunications for the Library of Congress.

One of the things Jeromie loves to photograph is people - his family members are regular subjects, one of his other passions is photographing folk and bluegrass musicians. Give a look at his website.

This shoot was a redo from a failed shoot I had done of Jeromie a few weeks prior. Again I ditched the ten-minute rule. Jeromie came up with the idea of using the mirror. I think it is an interesting conversation about the fact that we are both photographers - In the photos, Jeromie uses the mirror to show me my reflection, mimicking what he would do if he was making my photograph at the same moment.
